Intimacy Director

My passion for safety and advocacy was what sparked my interest in becoming an intimacy director for stage.

During my time in community theatre and at university, I witnessed the overwhelming lack of consideration and care for actors involved in intimate scenes. Not only did I see my fellow actors and peers feeling unsafe in rehearsal spaces— I experienced it. I was left feeling frustrated, devalued, and taken advantage of.

I decided to turn my negative experiences into concrete action. When the #MeToo movement happened, intimacy directors and coordinators increasingly began to crop up in order to address harm in the industry. It seemed serendipitous— following the career path of an intimacy director aligned with my professional goals and personal values. I have often found that we have to be the change in the industry that we want to see.

In a new century and a new generation of theatremakers, we have to set the tone for the future of our industry. One day, I hope that hiring intimacy directors will not only be encouraged, but an industry-wide standard.

As an intimacy director, I wear multiple hats— one, as a choreographer and collaborator; two, as an advocate for actors’ safety and boundaries. I strive to create work that is careful and deliberate, collaborative with directors and actors, and, above all, joyful.

My ID credits include community theatre experience, university experience, and off-Broadway experience. Specific areas of interest are Shakespeare, LGBT+ works, and works that reflect the global majority.

“"Hiring Rosie as my intimacy director was one of my best decisions as a director. The play required some incredibly sensitive moments of intimacy and I needed someone exceptionally considerate with a gentle hand. With Rosie, I got all that and more. Not only did they take care of the actor's sensitivities, they understood my creative vision and every sequence they choreographed felt like a natural extension of it.”

“Rosie brings comfortability and openness to every rehearsal. They allow feedback from actors, and encourage open communication to choreograph safe and accurate intimate moments. Rosie’s humor and bright personality is contagious and lovely to have in the room.”
